Cedar Cave review

What a cool guy! That was my second thought upon meeting Jake Duncan a few years back, when he joined the roster of Maylene & the Sons of Disaster. My first thought was, "Who the heck is this dude? Oh, another newbie. Okay." Maylene was going through a massive overhaul and Jake was one of the new-comers. It wasn't long (maybe two minutes) before I realized why they had him on board - he's just... a cool guy! Not only was he extremely talented and of a very chill demeanor, but he had that classic southern rocker look about him. Maylene to the T! (or is that "to the E"?)

Time went on, two albums came and went with hundreds of tour dates. I lost track of how many times I saw the band (including a go on the road with them for a week), but I got to know Jake pretty well and was sad to see him go this year. The reason for his departure are none of my business, but we kept in touch as he returned home to Mississippi. Since then, he's started working on a solo project and, from what I've heard, this is a good thing.

So far, he's only released one song, entitled "Cedar Cave," available for download on Reverb Nation, SoundCloud, and Facebook. Mind you, it is nothing like the southern metal riffs he produced on the Maylene stage. Instead, quiet your mind, sit back, and allow yourself to drift away on this acoustic river of ambient doldrums. "Cedar Cave," between it's soft vocal melodies and subtle instrumentation, feels more like a dream than a song, guiding you through forest nights in a haze of coming venture. The calm before the storm - a place you will be happy to find. And Jake Duncan takes you there.
