"He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep." - John 10:13
This is how we know Jesus is the Christ.
Yes, he was kind to sinners and yes, he healed the sick and fed the five thousand. Yes, he taught Biblical truths and yes, he had followers. And this is what the world looks at and replies, "Oh what a great prophet!" But Jesus of Nazareth faced the wolf called Death and overcame him. He claimed to be our Good Shepherd and he proved it by standing firm when that wolf arrived, lurking around the gate. We won't see it for another nine chapters, but he saw it coming since the dawn of time and before.
He did not come as a prophet, though he did prophesy, and he did not come as a good man, though he was the epitome of goodness. He was not a hired hand, but the shepherd himself. There is only one and this is how we know him. By his voice and by his stance, because his stance confirms his voice.
The Good Shepherd knows his sheep, he cares for them. He came to walk among them, to be close to them. They are his heart, so when the wolf came, he did not flee. Take comfort, brothers and sisters, take courage. He is not a hired hand, and when the wolf comes, our shepherd does not flee.
