I wish we was further north," groaned Roman as he paced the damp floor. He balled up his fists, spread his fingers, and repeated the motion in a rhythm that syncopated with his heavy steps. He was a big man, and seeing his nerves come undone was like watching a great tree fall. His cabin mate was the exact opposite. Hunched in the corner, Jack whittled away at a table leg with his pocket knife. The runt was calm, reserved in the beams of afternoon sunlight.
"Don't be ridiculous," Jack mumbled. "We is north. We're in Florida, for crying' out loud. This's about as north as y'can git without bein' in New York. Freakin' Yankees comin' outta our ears."
Roman scratched his head and walked to the window. He pulled back a salty board to look out and get a whiff of the ocean breeze. It wasn't what it used to be, that's for sure. The once crystal-blue tide, just a block away, was now briny and discolored. Bodies and body parts drifted in and out like seaweed. The two boys vacationed here every spring with their widowed grandmother. She owned this little hut and what started several years ago as an obligation grew into a sort of beloved family tradition. This was the eleventh or twelfth trip in as many years, save the one year they skipped on account of a hunting trip what went awry and left poor Jack in the hospital for three weeks. Roman wasn't a fan of the beach, being a redhead and prone to burn, but he always enjoyed the time with his grandmother and her cheesy grits. He smiled now at the memory of those grits.
"Nah, Jack. I mean geographically," he replied after a while. It took some time for him to think of the right word, and then a bit longer to remember how to pronounce it. "They got mountains and trees up there, and guns and shot towers..."
"Shot towers?" laughed Jack. "What d'shot towers have t'do with it? Ya plannin' to forge yourself some bullets, big brother?"
"I dunno, just thought they'd make for good hideouts and whatnot."
