Running Part 21

Ares squeezed the trigger, but nothing happened. Just a click. He squeezed again. Click. Again. Again. Again. Click. Nothing. Then came the bite.

Ares was a quick thinker, but he was also genuinely taken aback by the click. His gun wasn't working? How could it be? And before he could recover from the shock, the zombie was upon him. It sank its blackened teeth deep into his wrist, enveloping Ares' gun and hand completely in its mouth. Ares tried to pull away, but it was too late.

"A little help," he shouted to Oscar, who was just as much in shock.

Oscar shook himself out of his frozen state and took aim, shakily, with his own gun. His did not jam when he squeezed the trigger, but he was also not a good aim. The bullet caught the zombie's shoulder, nocking him to the ground and dragging Ares down with him. As he fell, Ares pulled a grenade from his wheelwell.

With the ruckus came more zombies, limping forward and joining Ares' lackey in gnawing on the fallen warrior. Ares punched and cursed them all, holding fast to the grenade, waiting for the perfect moment.

"Get out of here," he commanded Oscar painfully.

Oscar emptied his round on the hoard, killing - in the process - two and disabling a few others. He tossed the gun aside (he still had his katana, if need be) and took off rolling down the street. He refused to look back. He knew Ares wouldn't want him to. He could hear the gnawing, the breaking of bone and tearing of flesh, from a block away as he pushed himself along faster and faster.

Feasting, screaming, moaning.

Then, the explosion.
