Awakening review

"I want people to know that evangelism is not passé. It is vital."
This line at the end of "Awakening", the new documentary from Jews For Jesus, summarizes the entire video and the outlook of the organization. Narrated by actor Stephen Baldwin, and featuring participants, new and old, of Jews For Jesus, the 15-minute video covers the group's summer trip to evangelize on the busy streets of Manhattan. Filled with eye-catching cinematography and a U2-esque soundtrack, the documentary cuts between a plethora of candid scenes showing volunteers handing out tracks and talking to people. It even goes as far as to show them being ignored at times, but the volunteers and workers remain energized and passionate about their mission. After all, it is the Great Commission - to spread the Gospel! Interspersed with the footage of street work, we hear testimonies of volunteers who came to Christ through the ministry. We also hear one woman's story of how she discovered she was not alone as a believing Jew. These stories and scenes flow together smoothly to tell us an overall, bigger story of how Christ is working in and through this ministry.
As a fellow believer, I found myself challenged by this documentary. Even just in the 15 minutes, I felt a tugging in my heart to be more open and outspoken about my faith. We live in a fast-paced world of lost and dying souls. This is not to belittle our fellow man, and "Awakening" does well to avoid such views, but to remind us believers that it is our calling to share the good news. People are sick and we have the cure in Christ, so let's hand it out! Yes, the Lord is working in and through Jews For Jesus - to not only bring the lost to Christ, but to also encourage the Church to get its act together.
