I love the resolution of
God! Jesus, though focused and unwavering, is admittedly nervous
about the coming days. They're going to be rough, an understatement
at best, and while Jesus is not backing down, he confesses in the
previous verse, “My heart is troubled.” In this state of
emotional turmoil, he cries out what is most elemental to him. He
calls on the Father, “Glorify your name!” And it is here that the
voice of God, like thunder, responds with confirmation. “I already
have, and I will again.” This is all Jesus wants, that is for his
Father to be glorified, and God the Father says He's got it covered.
What a comfort this is to Jesus, and what a comfort it should be to
us. God is on the throne and taking care of business! No matter what
is going on in this strange and twisted world, filled with strange
and twisted people, our souls cry out from the deepest parts, “Father,
glorify your name.” And His answer resounds across the Heavens and
shakes our very core - “I Am.”
Over
and over again, we read the psalmists and the prophets calling upon
the Lord as their strength.
And this is the culmination of that strength, when we see the
strength Himself. It is a strength of will and resolution, the
strength of character only found in a noble, good, and powerful king.
“I Am.” This is the strength the psalmists and prophets found in
the Lord, and it is the strength that filled the Christ in these
final hours. And it is our strength today, our resolution to truth in
the face of an ever-cascading society of relativism and lies. We can
not only find peace, but also strength and certainty in the Lord, to say,
“He is glorified and will be to the end of the age. Amen.”
