The opening track "Mournful Things" conveys the crucifixion of Christ, giving beautiful imagery of the cross upon the hill and the suffering He went through for our sake. But it doesn't stop there, furthering the narrative with images of the cross now empty and hope risen in Him. The third track "Wandering Soul" is the one which hits home for me the most. Trudging through the first half, we find an outpouring of sad truth about where we are as fallen creatures, turned away from the Lord. The chorus is a cry out for mercy upon our lost souls. And then there is the resolve, one gripping line repeated - "I've tasted, I've seen how a man can be free!" Suddenly, the chorus resonates with hope. A call to worship with repentant hearts.
The whole sampler is filled with this flow of truth and good news. And it is matched with dynamic accompaniment, lead by Philips' acoustic guitar and backed by bass, drums, lovely harmonies, and a subtle organ. It may only be 4 songs, but each is a gem and warrants a listen... on repeat!
