"I see it!" cried Oscar as he came around a corner and spotted the steeple.
Close behind him came Ares, dropping one empty shotgun to make room for a loaded one. He had no time - let alone a free arm - to reload, so he made do with what he had. They were being chased by an endless herd of zombies, and no matter how fast they pushed their chairs along, the undead never seemed to lose ground on them. The mob continued to grow, a deafening moan rising like a tidal wave over the streets.
Another corner now, and the church itself was in sight. Oscar announced this to his friend, who was rolling backwards while shooting the oncoming army.
"Just another block to go," he called over his shoulder. "You good on amo?"
"I'll make do," replied Ares as he retrieved a grenade from one of his many packs. He pulled the pin and tossed it into the crowd. The explosion did three things. It scattered the zombies, thinning them out significantly. It also caught the attention of more zombies in the area, so that they came hobbling into view as well, refilling the ranks. But at the same time, it notified a priest of their swift approach.
Heathcliff looked out the stained glass windows to see what was going on. He had locked up the church tight, for safety, but kept an eye out for any of his congregation, if they came for sanctum or prayer. The explosion caught his ear and eye and, the moment he realized the two men coming toward him, he flung the doors open wide. Oscar and Ares rolled in, Ares still shooting the undead at their heels, and Heathcliff shut the doors again. The bolt set into place with a deep thud, and Oscar collapsed from his chair for lack of breath.
Time froze, it seemed, as the three sat there in the aisle in silence. They had nothing to say. They were glad for each other's safety, but that went without saying. The end was here, but that, too, went without saying. They were each scared, tired, and confused, but that, especially, went without saying. So, they sat and breathed. One was stretched out on the floor. One reloaded his gun. And one prayed.
