The three rolled themselves into the back-room, where they were greeted by two small families and an elderly widow. Oscar and Ares were surprised at the company, but found places at a kitchen table and accepted their friend's provision. It was nice, they both noticed right away, to not be stared upon as "the guy in the wheelchair." These were clearly members of Heathcliff's congregation, and as such, were well acquainted and acclimated to the disabled. It was not strange to them, nor uncomfortable for anyone. The children did, of course, stare a bit at Ares' arsenal, but that was to be expected, and it was, admittedly, a little cute.
When they were finished eating, one of the children - around five years old - came and placed a hand on Oscar's arm. She looked up at him with her big, brown eyes and smiled wide.
"Welcome to our church," she said sweetly. "You'll be safe here."
Oscar looked across the table to Ares, who shared his look of concern. They knew what this meant.
