Their debut full-length dropped shortly thereafter and lived up to their live performance. But the trick with new bands is to see how they follow up that first album. The moment of truth comes with their second release - when the world finds out if it was just luck the first time around or if they really are that awesome.
Well kids, that moment came this week for Paper Tongues and they passed the test! Their sophomore album - "Crowd Surfing" EP - shines even brighter than their first. It is a winner, from the opening riff that kicks your hips into high gear all the way to the easygoing, sing-along ending of the fifth (and final) track. It is a high-energy record, and the production quality caters pristinely to their innovative sound. Aswan North's untamable vocals are more powerful than ever as he plays with words like a hacky-sack on a summer's day. These melodies are cushioned by the nearly symphonic guitars of Forbes and Signa. And it all sets nicely against the backbone rhythm duo - bassist Danny Santell and drummer Luke Anderson. A clear display of creativity and tight musicianship all around.
The boys in Paper Tongues are a memorable bunch. They have already gone a long way in the industry and made their mark on music history. But, if this EP is any indication, it looks like Aswan and his gang are just getting warmed up.
